SWAZILAND BRIDGES

The new Sikhuphe Airport in Swaziland called for the construction of a new 18km stretch of dual carriageway between the airport and the MR3 highway.  Swaziland Consulting Engineers approached ARQ for assistance in the design of the highway structures required for the project.  These included a new grade separate interchange between the dual carriageways of the MR3 and the new D42, 4 additional road bridges, 5 pedestrian bridges, and a number of cattle creep culverts.

The road bridges comprise mainly of 2 span insitu reinforced concrete drum decks supported on spread footings with 18m spans (36m total length).  The five, 36m single span pedestrian bridges consist of two main steel arches with cables supporting the composite walkways.

An interesting idea for the layout design of the pedestrian bridges was the provision of collector distributor lanes which allows uninterrupted flow of traffic and divert pedestrians away from the highway.
