Having been responsible for the first new-generation Rubble Masonry Concrete dam to be completed in SA in 1995 (Bakubung dam), ARQ has continued to maintain some activity in this dam type, with a further 12 now completed.

RMC dam construction represents a highly labour-intensive and highly cost-effective method for the construction of durable, low maintenance dams. Although the technology loses some of its competitive advantage on a larger scale, dams of up to and over 40 m in height have, nevertheless, proved to be the optimal solution in a number of cases in a southern African environment.

ARQ is a pioneer and leader in the field of RMC dams in South Africa and the company is further undertaking an ongoing process of research and experimentation, using computer finite element models and prototypes, to further advance this highly cost effective, labour-based method of dam construction. The firm was responsible for the compilation of a set of best practice guideline on RMC dam construction for the South African Department of Public Works.
