Raimund has 30 years of experience in structural engineering, the vast majority in his chosen specialisation of bridges. In addition, he has been involved in civil, building, industrial, steel, earth retaining and water retaining structural works.
A particular area of specialisation lies in the interface between the structure and its foundation and together Raimund and Alan have developed a combined analysis approach that allows particular cost savings in this area.
Raimund has been involved in a number of award winning projects, including the Nelson Mandela bridge, and he is currently the director responsible for ARQ’s activities in the field of Bridges and Civil Structures. |

Gerhard du Plessis joined the Consulting Engineering firm Keeve Steyn in 1995 after a year on site with the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. He was responsible for the planning and design of several civil and commercial structures but became more involved in the design of bridges. In 2004 he became a Technical Director and assumed responsibility for the Bridge Design Section in the Johannesburg head office. In 2008 he joined ARQ consulting engineers as a Director in the bridge department.
Gerhard has 17 years of structural design experience of which the majority was related to bridges. He has a strong interest in prestressed concrete design and performed his Masters dissertation on partially prestressed concrete elements. |

Soon after graduating from the University of Pretoria in 1999, Tiaan left for the UK, where he spent several years developing a specialisation in the design and rehabilitation of bridges. Returning to South Africa, he continued in this field with ARQ and recently he was the bridge engineer for SANRAL’s bow string arch pedestrian and pipe feature bridge that crosses the N1 highway between Atterbury and Lynnwood roads. |

Niekie has specialised in the field of structural design, of building structures, since joining ARQ in 1998. He designed various timber, structural masonry, reinforced concrete and structural steel structures. Projects involvement included office developments, shopping centres, hospitals, clinics, factories, hangars, industrial structures (mining environment) low cost housing, investigation and repair of structures, etc.
Niekie also designed various wet services and was involved in the foundation design of various low-cost housing developments. He was resident engineer on the development of various shopping centres, a laboratory and various office blocks, light industrial steel structures, etc. |

After graduating in 2006 from the University of Stellenbosch, Dawie commenced work at ARQ Specialist Engineers, in their Bridge division. Since then, he has been involved in numerous structural designs for the improvements to National Road 1 Section 21 between the Flying Saucer (R21) and Atterbury Interchange – Package D3.
In 2008 he was appointed as Assistant Resident Engineer (Structures) for Improvements of National Route 1 Section 21 between the Atterbury Interchange and Scientia (N4) Interchange – Package D2. Currently he acts as Engineer in ARQ Structures division. |

Roger graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2005 and immediately joined the civils division of Grinaker-LTA as a site engineer. He worked in this position on several medium to large civils projects some of which are listed below and gained significant experience in the implementation and management of these projects.
He then proceeded to join ARQ Consulting Engineers in 2008 and undertook the position of a structural engineer and has since been involved as a part of the design team in the Bridge Department designing a variety of structures but in particular reinforced concrete structures.
Roger has been instrumental in the design of the new RC bridge over Apies River at the Fountains Valley Resort, Pretoria. In the second half of 2010 Roger got involved in the starting up of a new civil engineering enterprise, trading as TRIMN, targeting small to medium sized construction projects providing turnkey solutions. |

Quentin graduated in 1983 and has spent his career in the field of dams and hydropower. His particular areas of specialisation are Roller Compacted Concrete and arch dams. Quentin is currently in charge of ARQ’s Dams & Hydropower activities.
Quentin’s experience has included work on over 100 dams, up to 280m in height and in 25 countries. He has been involved in the design and construction of RCC dams in Turkey, Oman, Panama and South Africa, with over 2.5 million m3 placed to date.
Quentin is a member of the SANCOLD committee and he serves on the ECSA committee for the approval of professionals for work on dams in South Africa. He has been a member of the Client’s expert review panel on 5 major projects to date.
Quentin has published more than 30 papers on various aspects of dam engineering and he authored the “Concrete Dam Engineering” Chapter of the UNESCO Encyclopaedia of Life Support Systems (2002) and the chapter on RCC for dams in the 9th edition of Fulton’s Concrete Technology (RSA 2009). His PhD thesis developed a new understanding of the early behaviour of RCC in dams. |

David Cameron-Ellis’ 20 years of post graduate experience has focused primarily on the design and rehabilitation of dams. His experience extends from basic planning through to construction implementation. He has worked on numerous dam types, including earthfill, RCC, RMC and conventional concrete dams.
David has been involved in several hydro-electric projects with contributions ranging from design and management of small schemes to team member on larger ones. During Jan Swarts’s 26 years of post-diploma engineering experience, he has specialized in the field of dam engineering.
Of Jan’s engineering experience, 14 years (18 years part-time) relate directly to dams, during which time he has worked on aspects including planning, analysis, optimisation, design, specification and documentation, construction supervision and quality control, rehabilitation, hydrology and hydraulics on more than 21 dams. Jan’s involvement to date specifically in RCC dams totals in excess of 11 years.
He has his Masters Degree in sedimentation in dams and has lectured the subject Principles of Dam Engineering at Tshwane University. |

During her 7 years of post-graduate experience, Michelle has focussed on dam engineering, working on dams from 7 to 105 m in height. She has been involved in planning, detailed design and construction supervision for both new dams and rehabilitation work on existing structures.
Michelle has worked on aspects including foundation analysis and design, structural design, construction works design, materials and concrete and RCC quality control.
Over the past 5 years with ARQ, Michelle has been significantly involved in RCC dams, taking a specific interest in RCC materials.

Dario has worked in the Dams and Hydro division of ARQ since his appointment in 2012, after graduating top of his class with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (cum laude) at the University of Pretoria, 2011.
To date, his work has included drafting and detailing on a number of projects, including Mukurumudzi Dam and Mukurumudzi Tailings Storage Facility. During Alan Parrock’s 37 years of post-graduate experience, he has specialised in the geotechnics and geostochastics of soil and rock masses with particular reference to roads/pavements, foundations, tunnels, slopes, dams, offshore structures and commercial/industrial buildings.
This training and experience has been complemented by the development of (project) management, contractual, legal, financial and computer proficiency.

Bronwen graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2009 with a BSc Engineering Geology (Hons). She has gained work experience in Dolomite Stability Investigations and Geotechnical Investigations. David Cameron-Ellis currently heads ARQ’s Civil Department which handles all civil designs with expertise in township developments, roads and water and wastewater treatment and conveyance.
David’s experience ranges from implementation of water reticulation systems to bulk wastewater treatment facilities and outfall sewers and he has provided the civil design and construction monitoring for numerous township developments. The feather in David’s civil engineering cap is his involvement in the regional wastewater system for the DD5A drainage district for the East Rand Water Care Company. He was directly involved in this project from feasibility stage to commissioning. The project comprises a total of 23km of outfall sewers up to 1,8m in diameter and a 35Ml/d wastewater care works. It was completed within budget for a total cost of R 175 million. |
